And we thought it might help to share our personal marketing strategy\u2014especially for those who, like us, don\u2019t enjoy cold calls, salesy pitches, or job boards for freelancers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If those tactics feel misaligned with who you are (welcome to the introvert club), keep reading&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our Personal Marketing Strategy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A strategy is simply about deciding <strong>what to do and what not to do<\/strong> in order to achieve a result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our marketing strategy is deeply rooted in our personal experiences and values. Like many of you, we\u2019ve been on the receiving end of <strong>pushy cold calls<\/strong>\u2014the kind that rush to sell, based entirely on their timeline, not yours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So we made a clear decision early on: <strong>we would never use those methods<\/strong>. Instead, we chose to lead with <strong>authentic connection and trust<\/strong>\u2014and let the sales follow naturally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From \u201cWinning Clients\u201d to \u201cCreating Clients\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two ways to approach freelancing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Win clients<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Create clients<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people start with the first\u2014responding to freelance job platforms, social media ads, or inbound requests. But here\u2019s the downside:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You&#8217;re constantly competing on price.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clients think they know what they want, and there\u2019s little room to guide or reshape the project.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You end up selling <em>what<\/em> you do, instead of <em>why<\/em> it matters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Winning clients is reactive. Creating clients is proactive.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you create clients, you start by understanding what they <em>really<\/em> want\u2014even before they do. That means listening, observing, and building real relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Relationships &gt; Sales<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When we spot someone we\u2019d love to work with, we <strong>nurture the relationship first<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We engage with their content<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We send thoughtful DMs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We show up to their events<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We talk about them with others<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We make it clear: we\u2019re aligned with their <em>mission<\/em>, not just their money<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And yes\u2014this can take weeks, months, even years. But that\u2019s okay. We\u2019re not in a rush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This approach protects us from the dreaded feast-and-famine cycle. We don\u2019t sell out of desperation\u2014we <strong>invest in people<\/strong>, long before there&#8217;s even a sales conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because we only want to work with clients we believe in. Clients who inspire us, who share our values, and who challenge us to do our best work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So instead of closing a sale, we <strong>open a relationship<\/strong>.<br>When the time comes to sign the contract, it feels <em>natural<\/em>, <em>obvious<\/em>, and exciting\u2014for both sides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How We Use Marketing to Create Clients<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since our strategy is based on relationship-building, our marketing focuses on three pillars:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Being known<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Being liked<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Being trusted<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Our job is to show we <strong>understand our audience<\/strong>, so they feel confident investing in us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We focus heavily on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Content marketing<\/strong> (especially blogs, email, and LinkedIn)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>One or two key channels<\/strong> instead of spreading ourselves thin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Real conversations<\/strong> and consistent engagement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We don\u2019t play the numbers game. We focus on <strong>intentional connection<\/strong> and <strong>helpful content<\/strong>\u2014the kind that makes people say: <em>\u201cThey get it. They get me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Message Comes Before the Medium<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>People don\u2019t buy the best product.<br>They buy the one they <strong>understand the fastest<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why our <strong>message<\/strong> always comes first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We constantly refine our core message based on client feedback. We listen to the words our audience uses and reshape our positioning to reflect that. Pretty graphics and business cards are great\u2014but if your message doesn\u2019t resonate, it won\u2019t convert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you haven\u2019t nailed your elevator pitch yet\u2014<em>start there<\/em>. It\u2019s the foundation of everything else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">To Summarize:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A strategy is about <strong>choosing<\/strong> what to do (and <em>not<\/em> do) to achieve your goals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t chase sales\u2014<strong>open relationships<\/strong> instead.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t try every channel\u2014<strong>focus on 2 or 3<\/strong> that truly serve you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your <strong>message matters more than your platform<\/strong>\u2014craft it carefully and update it often.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Content is an act of kindness.
